The projects are actually Research and Development in nature, but most of the project have some commercial value. The Secondary Schools and Tertiary Schools (Form 6 and Vocational/Technical). The schools consists of St. George, Chung Hwa, Chung Hua, Chung Ching, Sekolah Menengah Masin, STPRI, Sufri Bolkiah, SMSO, MD, MS and MTSSR. I found that in most cases, that these students were doing projects that were well beyond their syllabus. In a few there were students doing University Level projects. I would know, I took Chemistry in UBD. Of course these students had helped from MIPR, Agricultural Centre, MOH, BSP and UBD. But I was still impressed.

The judges consisted of officers and staff from  MIPR Agriculture Department, BSP, LiveWIRE and MOE.

The projects consisted of Research in Agriculture, uses of Natural Pesticides, Natural Fertilizer, Natural Fungicides, Solar Powered Fish Feeder, Coconut Battery, Hydro Electricity, Natural Medicinal Products, Fuelless Lawn Mower, and a more efficient farming techniques.

Hope to see some of them participating in future CIPTA Awards, Think Big Biz Plan Awards, or even the LiveWIRE Business Awards.

LiveWIRE Business Awards 2010-2011

The LiveWIRE Business Awards was launched last Tuesday, on 9th November 2010. I have personally joined this competition a few times since 2003. It had allowed myself to realize my entrepreneurial desires, which started me in creating business plans and learning about how most business operate.

The categories for this competition are:

Category A – Business Plan (Just the Plan, not necessary you have or want to start a business, but its a good start)

  • A1 – Upper secondary and Form 6
  • A2 Post Secondary and Higher Institutions
  • A3 – LiveWIRE participants and open category

Category B – Enterprise (existing businesses)

  • B1 – LiveWIRE Business Network Awards (Biz that has started at least for 6 months)
  • B2 – LiveWIRE SME Awards (over 3 years in business)

The categories have been condensed from the previous years, that means that there is more competition for  a single category, on the other hand the prize money has been increased.

The Business Awards is probably the most well known of activities that is held by LiveWIRE Brunei. Other Activities are:

  • Bright Ideas (BI) – A 2 day Introductory Course in Entrepreneurship and the Right Mindset
  • Be A Successful Owner and Manager (BSOM) – a 4 day course which showcases Local Entrepreneurs to share their experience and knowledge.
  • Business Plan Series – A workshop to help participants in creating a business plan
  • Leadership Camp – A 3 day Camp that focuses on self-development, transformation and Leadership.

iCentre’s Think Big Biz Plan 2 day Workshop

I didn’t get short listed in this year’s think big biz plan competition, but I attended the Workshop anyway, It’s always good to keep an open mind and check to see if there are any new knowledge or to refresh them in my mind.

The first day was facilitated by Virginia Cha on the topic of finding ideas for a business and writing up a business plan. I found this session to be significantly different from the previous workshop she did previously. Among the interesting topics were:

The second day was facilitated by Kris Childress on the topic of presenting and pitching to investors. Among the topics were:

  • Introduction to Investors e.g.Venture Capitalists (VC’s)

LiveWIRE Business Plan Awards 2008/2009

LiveWIRE’s flagship event – the Business Plan Awards Prize Presentation Ceremony was Held on 10th December 2009 at the Hua Ho Manggis Ballroom.

Usually I would be a participant in this event, but I have been too busy this year to complete my business plan. But since I was a LiveWIRE Business Network Committee Member, I was involved in the events management as well as provided with a “booth” to show my company’s services.

The Guest of Honor was the Minister of Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) – Pehin Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj. Bakar. The attendees consisted of the competition participants, representatives from government ministries and departments, parents and friends of the participants, liveWIRE members and committee.

I was to busy volunteering that I didn’t thought of taking pictures. Hope the pic gallery on livewire-brunei’s website updates soon.

I hope that some of the winners from this competition transform their business plan into a real running business like I did. Wish all of you Good luck! 🙂

Shell LiveWIRE Virtual Business Challenge

Shell LiveWIRE International has launched a Competition. Basically it is a game simulation of running a business, where competitors try to get the highest mark. I’m not sure if Bruneians are  eligible Bruneians are not eligible to win the prizes as the website is based in the UK. But I would still recommend people to try out the game simulation. Currently I am Downloading the Game. I will post another article reviewing the game. Until then signup or login to www.shell-livewire.org/my-business-kit to download the game.
