Bruneian Life Coach

It is rare for me to read up about a Bruneian who had left Brunei and lived overseas and make something out of their life. Hope to see more of them. Unfortunately it seems that these individuals often find that they are valued more elsewhere and they stay there. Talk about Brain Drain. We need to keep this people here in Brunei, but if the country is not ready for them then it is our lost.

Prices of Cars in Brunei Showrooms

I’ve noticed that in car show rooms, there’s often a letter on the dashboard of the cars displayed about the price. I had only vaguely notice that it was “approved” by the Department of Economic Planning and Development (Jabatan Perancangan dan Kemajuan Ekonomi). I had recently found a list of the approved cars on their website.

It’s cool, now I don’t have to go from dealer to dealer finding the price of 1st hand cars. I’ll go check the price online, and see what the dealer has to offer. But then, I’m not in the market to  buy cars yet. are you?

Just to also share, the websites of interest for business:
-www.agc.gov.bn – the attorney general chambers website, check out online acts/regulations on business names registration, miscellaneous license, copyrights, trademarks, and other business related laws.

-www.bruneimipr.gov.bn – Ministry and Industry and Primary Resources, a lot of business may go through here e.g. agriculture, fishery and tourism.
-http://www.pelitabrunei.gov.bn/iiklan.htm – web page that contains most government tenders, although most government departments and ministries have their own tender web pages.

Luncheon Keynote on CSR by Thomas Thomas

I was lucky to represent for someone at this Luncheon by AsiaIncForum at the Radisson Hotel. The Guest Speaker was named Thomas Thomas. No typo there, the speaker spent a few moments to share his humorous experience regarding to his name, specifically on how his ancestors before him was named the same, and he stopped the tradition on himself from transferring to his son. Thomas Thomas is the Executive Director of Singapore Compact.

CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility according to Thomas is not just a side objective, but it can also be a long term core strategy in any organization. Specifically to fulfill the needs of the Environment, Employees and Economics, or as he puts it the planet, people and profits. He cited several real examples of companies that has practiced CSR at their core strategy and prosper to the present day.

I took pictures of the events and of the Slides which are available on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=201481&id=550578077&l=4a0f8bea5b

The categories for this competition are:

Category B – Enterprise (existing businesses)

  • B1 – LiveWIRE Business Network Awards (Biz that has started at least for 6 months)
  • B2 – LiveWIRE SME Awards (over 3 years in business)

The International Halal Market Conference (IHMC) 2010 was held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) on the 5th and 6th of June 2010.

The Guest of Honor for the conference was Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna. The conference covered on topics concerning the past, present and future of the halal market. Among the topics discussed were:

  • updates concerning the Brunei Halal Brand Initiative.
  • the international market trends and how halal can be the megatrend.
  • how a huge company like nestle is making halal as a business model.
  • Halal Finance and investments.
  • National Halal Programmes from countries that are close by like Singapore, Thailand and Philippines, as well as those in Australia, UK and Bosnia Herzegovina.

Details of the Conference can be read from the IHMC official website.

There were several issues that were raise from Questions and Answers sessions as well as the discussion dialogue held at the closing of the conference. Among them were:

  • How each country has made their own halal certification process and branding,  may benefit from putting a single halal certification for all countries. as this would help the countries to import and export to each other more easily. OR to have a single marketing company for all the halal certified countries/companies e.g. diamond marketing.
  • The issues of different countries may be practicing process that may seem dubious to each other. e.g. the use of stunning before the slaughter, or using machinery for slaughter.
  • Promoting Brunei Halal Brand by having companies undergo a sort of American Idol version for Halal Business or Business plan. and then have them present at the next IHMC.
  • Promoting CSR or Community/Corporate Social Responsibility as an Islamic way of doing business.
